This page has 2 courses on it - they run on the same days - one after the other

Please check carefully before booking – There are 2 courses here.
You are welcome to do both, as they run one after the other. You can also just pick the one that suits you best.
Both courses are open to ALL staff & Paramedic Students placed with SWASFT (all years)

Introduction to ECGs

A real ‘start at the beginning’ refresher session for those new to ECGs, those who feel they want to refresh right from the start of ECGs, or anyone who wants to go back and in over the foundations again.
This course is open to ALL staff and Paramedic Science students. Students and Mentors are particularly encouraged to attend together for shared learning and assessment.

An introduction to 12 Lead ECG interpretation covering views of the heart, identification of standard and abnormal waveforms and how to apply basic interpretation rules to identify and manage ECG changes associated with Myocardial Infarction.

Learning outcomes
  • An understanding of the 12 views of the ECG
  • An understanding of normal expected findings
  • How to apply 6 basic interpretation rules to identify the abnormal
  • How to identify and treat MI using 12 Lead ECG interpretations
Due to the current COVID situation, this course shall now be delivered online via Zoom – New to Zoom ? check out the FAQs on how it works below

ECG Level 1

By popular demand, this accessible and relaxed course is designed to go back to basics to support frontline staff in approaching ECGs with confidence.  This half-day session covers cardiac anatomy, how ECGs work, common arrhythmias, tips for getting the most from your ePCR and explores the latest relevant guidelines and pathways.  There will be the chance to practice your ECG interpretation in a friendly environment, to ask questions and hopefully even have a little fun!

Suitable for all grades with an interest in ECGs. It is recommended that staff complete the Level 1 course before doing the Level 2.

Half-day session (4 hours). Covering:

    • Basic cardiac anatomy and physiology
    • Cardiac conduction pathways
    • How ECGs work
    • Understanding the parts of an ECG complex
    • EPCR tips and tricks
    • Recognising arrhythmias

Presentation with lots of opportunities for learners to get involved.  Each learner will have interactive workbooks to complete and take home, lots of case studies to work on in groups and the chance to ask those burning questions!

  1. Identify components of the ECG complex and relate to the cardiac conduction cycle and basic cardiac A&P.
  2. Identify normal ECG parameters.
  3. Identify common ECG rhythms (catergorized as ‘essential’ for Technicians and Paramedics)
  4. Identify how to use Mobimed / EPCR to accurately record and document an ECG
  5. Demonstrate awareness of relevant SWAST clinical guidelines relating to ECGs
  6. Demonstrate awareness of benefits and limitations of ECGs as a tool in patient assessment.
