On successful completion of this 20 credit Minor illness and Minor Injury in Children) module, you will be able to:
At level 6 (UZWY6X-20-3):
- Demonstrate knowledge of the implications of the main anatomical and physiological differences between adults and children, for the management of minor illness and injury.
- Identify and evaluate patho-physiological features which can precipitate minor illness, and injury in children and be able to articulate the clinical application of this knowledge.
- Analyse and synthesise the current evidence base within children’s care and where appropriate apply the findings to the practice setting.
- Demonstrate the ability to make safe clinical judgements through the use of holistic evidence based approach to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care of children and their families/carers.
- Demonstrate the ability to identify and apply the current policy context in urgent and emergency care and apply to the management of children with minor illness and injuries.
At level 7 (UZWY6Y-20-M):
- Demonstrate an extensive knowledge of the implications of the main anatomical and physiological differences between adults and children, for the management of minor illness and injury and be able to critical analyse the application of this knowledge.
- Critically evaluate patho-physiological features which can precipitate minor illness, and injury in children and be able to articulate the clinical application of this knowledge.
- Critically appraise and synthesise the current evidence base within children’s care and where appropriate apply the findings to the practice setting.
- Justify the ability to make safe clinical judgements through the use of holistic evidence based approach to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care of children and their families/carers.
- Demonstrate the ability to critically review and apply the current policy context in urgent and emergency care and apply to the management of children with minor illness and injuries.

Structure
Content
The course syllabus typically includes:
- The physical and psychological differences between children and adults
- A child and family centred approach to history taking in an emergency/urgent care setting
- The current national policy context and how it effects the delivery of services to children and their families in an emergency, urgent care, out of hours setting and other unscheduled care settings
- Approaches to examination techniques in children
- Play and distraction techniques
- Approaches to consultation skills and the assessment of children presenting with minor injury and illness eg management of soft tissue injuries, management of feverish illness
- Clinical reasoning skills and an evidenced approach to the treatment and management of minor illness and injury in children
- Effective communication strategies
- Safeguarding issues
- Health education issues in unscheduled care
- Patient pathways, and appropriate referrals to primary or secondary care settings.
Learning and Teaching
This module has been designed using a variety of approaches which may include:
- Lectures and seminars
- Enquiry based learning
- Case based learning
- Clinical skills
- Technology enhanced learning
- Workshops and masterclasses.
Study time
48 hours.
Assessment
A 20 minute case based presentation with a 10 minute group discussion which will allow you to demonstrate in more depth any issues which were not clearly articulated within the presentation.
The case based presentation will be underpinned with a 1,500 word paper which details the evidence base for the management of the child in the case based presentation.
Level M indicates that you wish to study at Masters level, and Levels 1-3 indicate that you wish to study at Degree (Undergraduate) level.
