South West Integrated Clinical Academic (ICA) Programme

Health Education England (HEE) and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) have established an overarching Integrated Clinical Academic (ICA) Programme for healthcare professionals, other than medics and dentists. This programme is intended to increase research capacity to improve health and healthcare, by developing people with the potential and aspiration to become leading clinical academics and independent researchers in the future.

It is important for successful interns to have support from their line manager.

3 awards are available- These are funded for post -graduate level and beyond

£20,000 for Post-Doctoral bridging award (Applicants must hold a PHd)

Funding to support a number of post-doctoral bridging awards for non-medical clinical academics from the South West region. These awards offer the unique opportunity to complete an individualised, structured, twelve-month period of training and development for those looking to undertake a post-doctoral fellowship. With their clinical academic supervisor, successful individuals will have the opportunity to design a bespoke educational programme tailored to suit their specific clinical academic needs and aspirations. You can apply for an award from one of two panels: Exeter/Plymouth or Bristol.

£12,000 for Pre-Doctoral bridging award (Applicants must hold an MSc)

Funding to support a number of bridging awards for non-medical clinical academics between the Masters and Doctoral level. These awards offer the unique opportunity to develop an individualised, structured, six-month development plan. With their clinical academic supervisor, successful individuals will have the opportunity to design a bespoke educational programme tailored to suit their specific clinical academic needs and aspirations. The pre-doctoral bridging award is for those developing a doctoral fellowship. You can apply for an award from one of two panels: Exeter/Plymouth or Bristol.

£10,000 for Internship for study at MSc and beyond (Applicants must be 1yr post reg.)

Funding to support a number of internships in the South West.These awards support individuals who are early in their clinical academic career and are thinking about doing postgraduate academic study at master’s level and beyond. The internship offers an introduction to aspects of clinical research through gaining research experience by observing/visiting/working in a research environment and undertaking study in research in preparation for applying for a Pre-doctoral Clinical Academic Fellowship (PCAF). You can apply for an award from one of two panels: Exeter/Plymouth or Bristol.
